For the purposes of this article, I will refer to Corian® sinks, but the information is the same for all brands of solid surface sinks.

People love having a Corian® sink installed on their Corian® countertops. And why not? They are elegant and functional. The undercounter installation makes it a breeze to sweep the countertop crumbs right into the sink and there is nothing sticking out around the sink to catch the crumbs and get dirty.

It is logical to think that when a homeowner breaks a piece of the sink or a crack appears out of nowhere, they are all deformed. It is not cheap to replace a corian sink. A professional repair manufacturer can do this and you will never know it has been replaced, except of course the damage is gone. But here are some tips to keep you from paying the repairman.

1. Never drain hot water directly into the sink when it is cold. Before draining vegetables or pasta water into the sink, be sure to run hot (not boiling, but very hot) water in the sink to avoid thermal shock.

2. Always try to hit the drain while draining hot water. Now, you don’t have to be perfect with this, so don’t freak out if you can’t get the water down the drain without hitting the sink. It is a good idea to run most of the hotter water directly to the drain rather than leaving it in the sink.

3. Place a rubber mat in the bottom of the sink. It will absorb the impact of things that are hard enough to damage the sink. It will also provide additional protection against the tips of knives and forks.

Follow these tips and extend the life of your Corian® sink.
