Candle making can be one of the most exciting things you can do as a hobby. Now, if you want to take that hobby a step further, let me show you how to make scented soy votive candles. To begin with, I am going to assume that you are a regular candlemaker and are aware of all the safety precautions and equipment required to make a basic candle.

In this illustration I am going to make 8 scented soy votive candles. So, to get started, you’ll need 1 pound of pure soy wax flakes. The easiest way is to measure it with a scale.
After weighing the soy wax, use the method you’d normally use to melt it. That can be with an electric wax melter or with the traditional bain-marie on the stove. I still use the double boiler, some candle makers even use kitchen kettles.

Use your thermometer to check the temperature of the melting soy wax. When the temperature reaches 170-180 degrees your wax will be ready. Now your next step is to add the candle dye and gently stir the melted wax to mix the dye with the wax. Be sure to use candle dye and not crayons or paint, as this will clog the wick. After dyeing, you can add your fragrance oil to create the scented candle effect. Please note that you need to keep the temperature of the wax between 170-180 degrees when adding the fragrance oil.

The next step is to prepare the mold. It is best to slightly heat your mold in the oven for 10 minutes. That will prevent visible drag lines on the sides of the sail when you are done. When your mold is ready, cool your soy wax to 150 degrees to make the pouring process easier. For the soy wax in your molds. Be sure to follow safety guidelines for making candles and handling hot wax.

Now let the soy wax cool down naturally and insert your wicks into the candles. The wax will form a layer on the candle. You have to insert the wick before this skin gets too long, so you have to work fast. If there are holes after inserting the wick, you can use a torch or butane torch to smooth the top layer of the candle.

So that’s it, now you have to wait for the candles to dry. Some experts say 5 hours is enough, but I usually leave them on overnight. That way I will make sure the candles are 100% dry. The next morning you can simply pull the candles out by the wick. Give them another 2 days for the scented soy votive candles to cure before burning. That’s it, you are ready to start your own project. I hope you enjoyed this “how to make scented soy votive candle” project with me.
