Hi guys! Don’t raise your eyebrows or fear when you hear the word Linux. It is as easy to use as Windows. Just take a look at the articles below and all the Linux myths on your mind will be gone.

Introduction to Linux:

It is a free operating system available for download, but you have to pay a little to order it by mail or buy it from a company. Linux was born about 11 years ago; It was developed by Linux Tornados of Finland together with a group of programmers from the open source software movement.

Linux is constantly growing year after year. With a passionate community behind it, with big companies like IBM and HP pledging their support, it’s no wonder Linux, the wonderful server operating system of the past, has also made its way to today’s desktops.

Linux is based on the commercial operating system, UNIX. All operating systems attempt to include command line systems management. System administrators in companies use command lines all the time as their lifeline, but it’s not really intended for regular users.

Tips for home users:

  • If you want to get comfortable with Linux, you don’t have to put Windows aside. Install Linux on a separate partition and you can switch between Windows and Linux. For new users who are inexperienced with the computer, learning Windows or Linux takes the same amount of time and sitting.
  • It is suggested that new PC buyers should install both operating systems and use them equally. If you are getting Linux for more than 2-3 PCs, you can also get training and support at a small cost for free, if you choose to have it. Otherwise, it is the Linux community on the net to your rescue.
  • You don’t have to be a heavy computer user to work with Linux. There are desktop environments that allow you to work on Linux while working on Windows. When working with Windows, the same goes for Linux.

Linux gets to work on decreasing PC prices.

PC prices are already going down. And you have more options with operating systems and applications. From being an operating system that only computer professionals had heard of, Linux has, in a short time, made a transition to the lucrative, high-profile segment of the home PC.

PCs include the operating system. Linux is a free open source operating system which means that the code that runs is open for everyone to see, work with, modify, and develop their own innovative applications for it. But this is nothing compared to the money people spend on operating systems like Windows. And a company packages Linux and applications based on it with a computer, a large part of the cost of the PC is reduced. Currently some branded PCs that come with Linux are available for Rs: 25000 / – and up.

Linux is better than other operating systems

Linux users aren’t even flinched before saying the emphasis comes from a deep dislike of Microsoft’s practice of trading the earth for software. But a lot of this comes from the fact that they are willing to swear that Linux is more stable. According to a more recent survey, web servers use Linux-based servers for hosting purposes.

A note here though: free in Linux means freedom of choice, to redistribute, to install a feature, freedom to modify the source code. That is the spirit of Linux being free.

Safety:

Linux has better security support for multiple users, allows you to configure a stable server, Internet gateways, etc., and still can be used as a desktop workstation. There are no blue screens or viruses to speak of. It is rarely attacked by viruses and there are fewer viruses written for Linux. You can be given more than 10 points on a 10-point scale for safety.

Linux myths

Installation:

Linux is difficult to install, right? Not really. Most people have not installed Windows on their computers either, as it comes preloaded. Linux is so easy – some say – easier to install compared to Windows. You can install it through a graphical user interface like Windows. These days, Linux versions are easier to install than Windows. But what really puzzles most people when installing Linux on a second partition of their hard drive, when they want to be able to use both operating systems.

A partition is a way of organizing the space on your hard drive by creating virtual sections that are separated from each other. Most computers running Windows or MS DOS have a large amount of space to store the operating system. This space is drive C. If you have a large hard drive, it has likely been divided into smaller bits called partitions to help you better organize your data. These partitions are usually named D :, E: etc. you could have linux on any of these.

Windows 98 creates a file system called FAT32 on the entire hard drive, DOS and Win95 use FAT16. Linux has many file systems, the most popular being ext3. But you could also have Linux installed on Fat32 partitions.

Linux is very difficult and relies on text commands.

Linux has come a long way from being the system of brilliant computer users. It has extremely advanced X Windows systems that have a full graphical user interface, you know, like Windows. It also has a large number of window managers that allow you to work with different levels of customization of your desktop.

Linux has a robust character cell interface where commands must be typed. x Windows is a free program that runs under Linux to provide a GUI where the mouse and keyboard can be widely used. But the X system itself is quite primitive and needs a window manager or desktop environment, like GNOME or KDE, to be really usable. Window managers are programs that allow you to interact with the underlying X system and the Linux operating system by passing commands. The most popular window managers are Sawfish, Enlightenment, Black box, after step, and Window maker.

As for desktop managers, they have their own window manager and other tools that make you feel like you’re working on Windows. GNOME and KDE are the most popular. GNOME stands for GNU Network Model Environment and KDE for the K desktop environment. They have tools that allow drag and drop, they have panels and taskbar, almost like window clones.

Hardware compatibility issue and few applications running on Linux

Well, most newer distributions will detect and configure your hardware in no time, unless you have a really old or exotic piece of hardware. All hardware is correctly detected and its drivers are installed. Only Win modems (internal modems controlled by Windows drivers) face problems.

As for the software, there is a lot. And most of it comes free for you to use, modify, and configure based on your needs. Most of the great software for Linux is free, and it doesn’t hurt to try. Get free online support quickly on any query you may have. And you don’t even have to erase your Windows. Just get Linux on a different and free hard drive partition to switch between them as you wish.

Other packages are commercial and you need to buy the software, but this is primarily for the software and training you need, and not the software itself. Sometimes if you have the Windows version (like a damn) you can download a little program that will allow you to play the game on Linux. Games on Linux are of very high quality and features. You will enjoy them. What is available here?

Office packages: Star Office, Open Office, Applixware, Corel WordPerfect

Graphics: GIMP, Corel Photo paint

Music: XMMS, Free Amplifier, Real Player

Video: MTV, Xine

Games: FreeCiv, Tux racer, Doom, Quake, Heretic, Unreal And the list keeps growing.

Linux varieties for home users:

If there are so many people working on it. There are likely many versions of Linux as well. Many companies that work on Linux have created what are called Linux distributions. There are versions of Linux that are compiled, packaged, and released with additional software.

RedHat – Probably the most popular version and, in many ways, the main one. It is currently on version 9. Installation and configuration is easy. A blue curve file manager and the default GNOME desktop make it look just awesome. It comes with a number of tools that allow it to be used as a server and as a workstation. The Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) format developed by Red Hat has almost become the defector of software distribution in the Linux world. Installing new software is very easy. It also has an advanced and easy font management system that makes fonts in X Windows look great.

Mandrake: Mandrake Linux is now at version 10. It can be installed on a native Windows partition using the Lin4Win tool, but this can slow down the machine. It also allows you to do a traditional Linux installation on your own dedicated partition. Mandrake software setup and installation is easy. It follows a slightly modified RPM architecture called mdk.rpm, but most Red Hat software can also be used for Mandrake. The standout feature of this version is the collection of window managers – fans of eye candy will have a blast.

SUSE: From Germany comes the Chameleon, SUSE. Now, in your avatar 8.x, you have one of the most extensive software packages compiled, and its installation is easy with yast (yet another software tool) that provides a centralized interface from where you can choose the software to install . . Among other things, SUSE includes some impressive 3D games that showcase Linux gaming prowess.

Corel / Xandross: Corel entered the Linux market with Corel Linux a few years ago. It has now been merged with Xandross OS, which is based on Corel Linux. This is a Debian-like version and can be installed without much problem after resizing the Windows partition. Xandross contains Crossover Office, which is a refined retail version of WINE that allows you to install and run many Microsoft applications.

Windows applications on Linux

Some applications have been moved to Linux, others run with a program called WINE (Wine is not an emulator). Commercially available crossover software also allows you to use your Windows programs on Linux. VMWare is another program that allows you to run Windows on Linux. Now, many software companies have started developing high-end software for Linux.

Bottom line:

The good thing about Linux is that most of the software is free and you can use it legitimately without worrying about piracy. If you’re concerned that Linux doesn’t look as pretty as Windows, all you have to do is take a look at some of Linux’s great interfaces and window managers. But you don’t find many multimedia titles for Linux. And if you like a lot of these, Windows is on the way to go. So if you have a PC that runs both, you can easily switch between the two and get the best of both worlds.
