The short answer is no. The problem with the WoW authenticator is that it is a mathematical equation. Any mathematical code can be hacked. Like your account password. Blizzard Entertainment has exaggerated the security of this authenticator so much that people blindly believe that it is the cure for all account security problems.

You may have already heard complaints from authenticator owners who have been hacked. The major MMORPG news reporting sites have already pointed out that these things don’t work. The crazy thing is that Blizzard Entertainment is now talking about making the WoW authenticator mandatory. What will change when everyone has one? Hackers will get smarter and more of them will hack authenticator-enabled accounts.

The problem is not in how much information people enter to access your account, the problem is in who else is viewing that information when they enter it. Other companies don’t even have the problem that Blizzard has with their accounts being hacked. Wouldn’t it be more lucrative to hack into someone’s PayPal account than to hack into their World of Warcraft account? However, you don’t see that much happening with other websites. This is why many World of Warcraft players feel that Blizzard Entertainment is partially to blame for this series of attacks.

Another problem arises when talking about the WoW authenticator. The WoW authenticator is really only designed to work when it is actually attached to the account. Do you know how easy it is to get customer support to remove the WoW authenticator from your account? You only need to have a few bits of personal information to remove the authenticator. Most people could get this information if they just hacked into your email account and because they have hacked into your email account they may have your Battle.net password as well.

Most World of Warcraft players don’t want to know how hackers hack into computers every day. They just want to sit back and enjoy the game every night when they get home from work. When Blizzard tells them that the WoW authenticator does work, it is much easier for them to believe Blizzard and then do their research to find out. Trust me, if you want your articles, account, and personal information to be safe, you should try reading a bit more about how hackers hack into WoW accounts.
