The other day, I was at a used bookstore that was going out of business in our local area. The thought of that totally pissed me off, however everything was on sale so I wanted to see if there was anything I needed. They had a section with some very old books in one of the corners. I took out a book that I wanted to buy, but the pages had turned brown and the acid paper was rotting. I opened the book and sneezed. Apparently he had dust mice.
I thought to myself “that’s unfortunate, and I don’t need dust mice in my own home or my own personal library”, and that part of the used bookcase smelled musty, maybe there were mold spores on the walls. However, that got me thinking about how so many wealthy people in past periods have had emphysema and other lung problems who also had large libraries in their own mansions or homes. Could it be that all these old books over time, as they decomposed, caused dust particles and mold spores to enter people’s lungs?
If that’s the case, old bookcases that aren’t kept at the right temperature could be dangerous to your health. Maybe we don’t have to worry about this, because the era of electronic books is here. I often feel like my home library is becoming more like a museum of artifacts. I always thought that owning a personal library was of great value in pursuit of a lifetime of learning, constantly improving intellect and life experience understanding of the world we live in, however, perhaps I am insecure, as to health.
