A system that uses video cameras to transmit images to monitors in a centralized control room is known as closed circuit television, or CCTV. Security and surveillance are the main purposes of having CCTV cameras installed at key locations within an area.

The advancement of technology has improved CCTV security systems from stark and remarkable surveillance cameras that capture images without color to cameras that can track movement and capture minute details in full color. In terms of data storage, the invention of digital video recorders (DVRs) was a breakthrough. A DVR security camera can operate remotely, is capable of detecting motion, and has an internal memory that saves captured images taken over a long period of time. CCTV systems can also use Internet Protocol (IP) to send images in digital form to specific networks. Wherever the Internet is available through a 3G equipped computer or mobile phone, the owner can retrieve and view the images being recorded by an IP security camera.

Institutions that involve the exchange of money, such as banks and casinos, as well as public areas where many people congregate, such as airports, terminals, and shopping malls, are often protected by surveillance camera systems. Patrolling hallways and offices can be done remotely from a building’s security office with the use of video surveillance systems, reducing the need for additional manpower. Security cameras can be used not only to monitor the interior of a building, but also to survey exterior areas such as parking lots and perimeter fences. Governments have also used outdoor security cameras to monitor traffic, identify lawbreakers, and track road mishaps. Residences can also be installed with home security systems to protect property from break-ins and theft.

The extensive use of CCTV security has raised concerns regarding the invasion of privacy. However, installing security cameras in public areas poses little threat to people’s privacy while greatly contributing to crime prevention and investigation.
