Artificial intelligence is improving all the time, soon AI software engineers will create joke recognition systems, where the computer will understand irony and know when the human is telling a joke, then reciprocate with a joke of its own, perhaps creating a joke from scratching.
The system would be preloaded with all the jokes common to human interaction in all cultures. You’ll be able to pick one that probably hasn’t been heard by the human you’re working with at the time; also put in memory what has been said to that individual so that he does not repeat it.
Wow, this is getting complicated fast, isn’t it, and that’s exactly why it hasn’t been fully accomplished. Humor has been a major hurdle for human voice recognition and artificial intelligence systems, yet it is something that humans have a knack for. Still, they are working on this challenge and we will see in 5-10 years, AI software people will solve that problem.
This will mean advances for human companions for long-term spaceflight, help with rehabilitation, and ease the strain on humans working alongside robotic companions or assistants, as the transition from human and robot workers takes place. Since robots will be working with and assisting humans, keeping the peace will be necessary to foster cooperation.
Humor programming is considered by some to be the crowning achievement of Artificial Intelligence and this may be a point where humans accept their AI assistants as one of them. The future is coming, and it won’t be long.
