Birth control pills are commonly used these days to control the size of the family in order to effectively raise children. Old age concepts of larger families are now outdated, as many people tend to prefer only one or two children. For birth control, women use many forms of birth control, the most common of which are birth control pills. However, the side effects of birth control are sometimes quite unknown to these women.

Some side effects that need to be monitored during use are, in particular, headaches, nausea, non-period bleeding, decreased libido, and breast tenderness. The pills basically work by having estrogen which allows one not to conceive the child. However, the effects of this estrogen can be adverse to women’s health as it tends to increase the chances of blood clots, causing women to develop emboli and therefore heart problems. Women, who smoke and drink alcohol in particular, are at higher risk of high blood pressure, heart problems, and may face even minor consequences, such as strokes, due to the formation of embolisms.

Apart from this, the side effects of birth control also include severe migraine attacks and increased risk of breast cancer. These pills tend to cause increased mutations, so they are quite dangerous even for those who already have breast cancer.

Because these pills tend to alter the hormone level in the body, they tend to have certain endocrine effects. Hormones in the body are disturbed, which can also cause depression and moodiness in many women. Many women do not feel like continuing their sexual relations due to the effect of these pills. A lot of research has been done on the safety and other concerns regarding birth control pills. It is also found that due to the hormonal disrupting effect of these pills, women also tend to have problems in lactation after childbirth. They tend to produce less milk due to the hormone-altering effects of the pills. Many women also find it difficult to conceive a child after stopping the use of these pills, as the effect of their chemicals lingers on the hormones for quite some time.

Some women also feel a change in their body’s metabolic patterns and tend to gain weight, have more appetite and a greater desire to eat because of the pills.

Despite having some long-lasting hormonal effects, birth control pills are known to be one of the safest methods of birth control. However, one should have proper consultation and guidance from the doctor before taking any kind of birth control pill.
