Moving to a new location is always a big project, no matter how many things you have or how big the new apartment is. This article outlines the various pros and cons associated with moving from a cleaning perspective.

Pro: You can get rid of clutter and things you don’t need
This is obviously one of the biggest benefits and it seems like it’s one of the rare situations where most people get rid of clutter they don’t need in the first place.

You can decide item by item what to pack and move to a new location. This is good, because only the items you need will be brought to your new home.

Pro: Less excess load from the old home
Not only is it good to get rid of things you don’t need, but it also means that the excess mental load is much less. This is because the less stuff or clutter you have with you, the happier you are. At least this is my experience about it.

Con: It’s a big project that takes time.
Organizing your things while you move may not be the easiest task in the world. It can be done, but it takes a lot more work this way.

Instead of tidying up while you move in, you should already tidy up your home while you live in your current home. When you decide to move, the move becomes much easier this way.

Con: Can you handle sentimental clutter?
I’m not sure if there are any rules on how to handle this, but it’s inevitable to deal with sentimental clutter as well. It appears anywhere and can really slow you down when you move to another location.

I’ve been pretty ruthless when it comes to sentimental clutter.

If the material is something I haven’t used for a long time (say, over a year) or is something I just found out about, having forgotten it in a storage area like the basement or attic, I just throw it away.

If I feel like that item could have some use, I could donate it to my family or friends. That way I can keep the object close to me, but at the same time I can live without it.
