People always hesitate about change. For business owners, who want to use and reap the benefits of modern technology, it can be difficult for them to introduce and explain video conferencing to their majority of employees who will resist the idea. This is because some people in the company, especially those who have been working there for so long, are not open to the world of new routines and adjustments, especially when it comes to technology. But there is still a way to do it: by explaining how video conferences work.

In simple terms

For people to understand what video conferencing is, you need to make them understand how it works. Basically, video conferencing refers to a communications technology where video and voice are integrated in order to connect with other people or users who are in other areas. The idea behind this is to break down barriers in communication by creating a way where people in two different places can talk and see each other as if they were in the same room in real time. Actual time refers to the duration in which the conversation is updated and the parties can exchange thoughts and communicate without much delay.

For a video conference to work, each party must have a personal computer with high memory, a webcam, a microphone, and broadband Internet with a high-speed connection. These equipments are the basic ones that are needed for a simple videoconference. In more sophisticated areas and commercial establishments such as offices, more video conferencing equipment is used.

These include video, wall mounts, tabletop microphones, and more. They also have more complex video conferencing systems and make use of video conferencing services to ensure smooth communication during meetings.

Unlike voice-only technology, video conferencing allows people to have natural conversations using good bandwidth. Good bandwidth is very important for video conferencing because it makes continuous transmission of voice and video possible.

When it comes to options, there are different types of video conferencing that people can choose from: “point to point” or “multipoint”. “Peer to Peer” video conferencing is considered to be the most common and basic type used by so many users around the world. It uses individual IP addresses and directly connects two different users from different places. This type of video conferencing is quite popular in home environments and some other small offices. Peer-to-peer video conferencing also serves as a video phone for many. However, you can only connect two personal computers.

“Multipoint” conferencing, on the other hand, comes in several variations. It has a reflector and a multipoint connector unit (MCU) that serves as a “multipoint bridge” enabling two or more three or more users. Here, a central hub is used to connect users and can also function as a “stand-alone” device or a computer server on its own. In multipoint, room systems, as well as rolling systems, can be added to the personal computers themselves.

In more technical terms, the “IEEE” standard serves as a guide on the status and development of video conferencing. There are two guides here: the H.320 standard which tells how the process works using ISDN telephone circuits and the “H.323” standard which explains how video conferencing works using the Internet (TCP/IP or IP only).

Understanding how video conferencing works depends primarily on the person’s willingness to adapt to changes. If you think your employee is not aware of understanding it, you better not train them because it will just be a waste of time.
