Between the ages of twelve and twenty these children seem to grow fast. Before you know it, they’re in college and driving and you’re worrying every moment!

In many cases, with only children it seems that moms and dads hate the hell to let their son or daughter go. But hey, they have to start the journey of their own life. Knowing when to let go is even more difficult. For example, you have a twenty year old still living at home and he or she still acts like she did when she was sixteen or seventeen. You may look at yourself and say no, but they need to start down that road, you know the road you’ve been on there, the one with detours and potholes, the road where you made your mistakes.

By allowing yourself to tell them before they do something stupid that it’s not a good idea, you should feel more at ease yourself, you told them the downfall of their stupidity. If they do and fail… hey, it’s a learning experience. In the end they will thank you. Kids now have everything from cars to computers. They take it all in and spend the money like it grew on a tree. Let them realize that there is NOT a money tree. There never was one and never will be.

If the children live at home, set some simple rules. Be careful not to infringe on your privacy. If they say they’ll be home at midnight, don’t hesitate to call them. Tell them you’re going to do this. If they say they’ll be home at a certain time and they’ve gone through that time without calling you, then call them. Calm down, but don’t be angry. Today, everyone has a mobile phone and children are easier to locate.

So moms and dads take it all in stride and let the kids go down that long road of detours and potholes. We at our age are still on the same path and there are still those detours.
