A very unusual combination, the Brazilian Mastiff is in fact a mix of a Mastiff and a Bloodhound. They have traits of both breeds; including the famous sense of smell for which hounds are so well known. They also have the protection and sweetness with children so common in mastiffs. Coming from Brazil, they are known (in Portuguese) as Fila Brasileiro. Previously employed as plantation guards, they came to North America with the conquistadors.

This is a large breed, adults sometimes weighing over 100 pounds and measuring up to 2 feet. They have a face and neck reminiscent of a hound, and coat colors ranging from tan to black, even yellow, with brindle dogs being the most prized.

Tame like most mastiffs, they are capable of attacking when called upon. Excellent watchdogs, however they are very good with children. They are also famous for their loyalty.

They are often used as hunting dogs, as they inherited good hunting instincts from the hound part of their lineage. They are especially good at locating and then immobilizing prey; the word “Fila” in its name is Portuguese for “hold”.

More athletic than most Mastiffs (another bloodhound trait) and less prone to the obesity that can plague the Mastiff breed, they are healthy dogs. They get their protection from the Mastiff in their lineage.

More than most other varieties, Brazilian Mastiffs do not like strangers. It seems that the only sure way to get on the good side of a Brazilian Mastiff is to spend a lot of time with them as puppies if you want them to remember and show that famous protection towards you.

They will attack without permission, so it is wise to hide it if strangers plan to stay as guests. Even the best of the best Brazilian Mastiffs, show quality, can get aggressive with the judges. That is a terrifying thought. Imagine being attacked as a show dog judge? I think I would keep the working dog category out of my choice of judges. That is to say the least.

When choosing a Brazilian Mastiff puppy, be picky about where you buy him. Make sure your dealer is honest and reputable. You would do well to gather references ahead of time. This way, you can make sure that your new family member comes from a good place.
