A common problem that affects people with a current sedentary lifestyle is constipation. So it’s no surprise to see how hugely popular laxatives are. Laxatives are medications, foods, or any other lubricating substance used to stimulate bowel movements, primarily to treat constipation. Although laxatives help remove undigested food material from the colon and large intestine, high doses can cause diarrhea.

The link between laxative use and the effectiveness of birth control pills

There is not enough medical evidence on the direct link between the use of laxatives and the effectiveness of birth control pills. However, as a general understanding, if laxatives cause diarrhea, they can hamper the effectiveness of the birth control pill in the body. There is a chance of getting pregnant then, as the pill may not be absorbed in the way it would be, if one did not have laxative-induced diarrhea and vomiting. It has been observed that if there is vomiting within two hours of taking the pill, it should be considered as a missed pill. Also, if one has three or more loose stools over a couple of days, the effectiveness of the pills may decrease.

The example of Castor: a laxative and contraceptive measure

Castor beans are used to produce castor oil, which while a strong laxative, also has the ability to induce labor in pregnant women. Given this potential ability to stimulate the uterus, it can also produce the effects of a birth control mechanism. Although the effects are not proven, there is the possibility of investigating its effectiveness both as a contraceptive method and as a laxative.

healthier alternatives

While the exact link between birth control pills and laxatives has yet to be proven, it’s important to understand that taking laxatives for a long period of time is not a good idea and certainly not good for your intestines. What may start as a cure for mild constipation can turn into a vicious cycle of laxative overreliance! If constipation worries you and you take birth control pills, it may be a better idea to improve your overall lifestyle than to rely on laxatives. One can switch to better healthier alternatives. Try the following:

Exercise: Regular exercise and training will keep your entire body working well and fit as well.

Eat a healthy diet: Eating a high-fiber diet with lots of salads and vegetables is a great idea to stimulate your intestines and ensure waste elimination.

Drink plenty of water – The ultimate natural body cleanser is and always will be water. Helps remove toxins from the colon and intestines.

Finally, in case you still have constipation problems and are taking birth control pills, a visit to the doctor would be the best option!
