The phrase “catch line” is little more than an oxymoron, but catch lines have been around for so long that the name is synonymous with a phase or accepted statement. Pickup lines have long been crafted as puns, wishful questions, or statements of sarcasm, irony, and satire.

A pick-up line is a statement or question that demands an answer. The analogy of a pickup line is that of a salesperson knocking on a door; the door opens, he slips his foot inside as an attempt to continue his spiel. There are stories of many vendors with broken toes, as well as delivery guys in the pickup line with slapped faces and bruised egos. The intent of a “pickup line” is an introduction to pick up more communication. I borrowed two phrases from John Shore that displayed irony and a clever play on words using two well-known in history:

  • Noah: There’s room for one more!
  • Vincent Van Gogh – The ear is looking at you!

Corny?

The word “Corny” is in the same family as “Pick-up lines,” but after years of associating what we consider unsophisticated, trite, or less than appropriate to our intelligence, we’ve dubbed it “cheesy.” With that boost of slang knowledge, you’ll now be able to determine what a cheesy pick-up line is. You might caution that the receiver’s perception of the pickup line will ultimately determine whether or not it is classified as cheesy.
