Summer can be a daunting time for parents who have active children who are not easily entertained. It can be even more difficult for parents like me who are working from home. Suddenly the house is flooded with noise and after the fiftieth time I hear “MOM, I need…” I’m ready for a straitjacket. This summer, I plan to use summer day camps to entertain my children. However, choosing one turned out to be quite difficult.

I never realized how many different types of summer camps there were for kids these days. Let me help you narrow down your search. You’ll need to see what’s available locally for your child, but generally speaking, these are the types of camps that are offered.

Day Camps vs. Residential Camps

You will need to decide if you and your child are ready for a residential overnight camp. Personally, I have not arrived yet! Yes, my kids can drive me a little crazy as I try to work during the day, but I want them home with me at night. However, older children can benefit from this experience and learn a bit of independence.

Day camps can be full day or partial days and are usually set up so you can go week by week. This is especially useful if you have a vacation planned.

Types of Camps

Athletic Camps – These are great for teaching your child a sport. Whether you want your child to play soccer, basketball, baseball (the sky’s the limit), or perhaps a less traditional sport like fencing, there’s a camp that can teach beginning and advanced athletes. Many high schools hold track camps toward the end of the summer and offer tryouts for high school sports teams for sixth graders.

Fitness/Weight Loss Camps – If your child is overweight or obese, many camps specialize in teaching children proper eating and exercise habits. Even if your child isn’t overweight, learning to incorporate healthy eating and exercise into their daily lives is truly a lifelong gift.

Performing Arts Camps: Got a star in the making? The performing arts are great for building your child’s self-confidence, whether he’s outgoing or rather shy. The fear of public speaking sometimes outweighs the fear of death in people, and a performing arts camp will help your child feel comfortable in front of an audience. You never know, you might have a future Russell Crowe or Nicole Kidman on your hands!

Computer Camp: Advanced computer techniques such as web design and graphics are becoming increasingly important. Despite our declining economy, many Internet companies are staying afloat and making a profit. This is a good indicator that your child will trust the Internet no matter what career he chooses one day. A computer camp is a fun and valuable way for your child to spend part of their summer.

There are many summer camps available for your child, and many variations. Do your homework and make sure the camp is run by competent entities that follow all licensing procedures. For example, a weight loss or fitness camp must be staffed by licensed registered dietitians and qualified athletic trainers.
