Window air conditioners are small units made to fit a standard window space. They work like any other air conditioner and come in different BTU (British Thermal Unit) capacities to cool rooms of different sizes.

Window air conditioners came onto the market as a solution for people who couldn’t afford or didn’t want central air conditioning. Because central air conditioning can be quite expensive and because many people live in small apartments, central air conditioning is not for everyone. This led to the advent of window air conditioners.

Window air conditioners have a hot coil and a cold coil along with two fans. Fans blow air over these coils, in turn drawing heat and humidity from the room to the outside area, providing clean, fresh air.

The capacity of an air conditioner is measured in BTUs. Therefore, the size of the air conditioner plays a vital role in determining its cooling capacity. When a small window unit for a large room isn’t enough, a large unit for a small space is a waste of money. Therefore, you should purchase a window air conditioner according to the space of your room. For a space up to 350 square feet, you would need 8,000 BTUs. The number of BTUs grows proportionally according to your space.

Window air conditioners have a high energy efficiency ratio, are quiet and, when installed correctly, cool down an entire space very quickly. There are many types of window air conditioners from different companies available at different prices. Companies like Haier, Kelon, and Carrier have products starting in price ranges as low as $50-$150. They come with quiet operation, timer, dehumidification, air filters, and much more.

If you spend more than $300 on an air conditioner, the quality and value increase dramatically. Air conditioners have a high EER and BTU capacity and are capable of cooling large spaces very quickly. Spend $600 or more and you’ll buy a super luxurious model that will probably chill your entire first floor living room.
