Bangles
In Indian Culture, Bangles are one of the most important pieces of jewelry for women. They are considered as the symbol of Saubhagya or complete woman. Generally, a married woman wears multiple sets of bangles on both hands. They are made from gold, silver, brass, copper, glass or even iron and other materials. They have been used in India for centuries and were worn by both men and women. The word bangle comes from the HINDI word Bangri or Bangali, which in sanskrit gives the meaning “the ornament that adorns the arm.” Bangles are usually circular in shape. But they can be shaped into other shapes as well. Today’s fashion bangles have more flexibility and are available in different colors and models.
In the past, bangles were also worn in other parts of the world like Africa and the Middle East. But the trend of wearing them in India is believed to have started as early as 2500 BC. The ancient excavation site of Mohenjo-Daro found bronze bangles that were worn by women in those days. Later, archaeologists discovered more indian bangles made from gold and other metals in various other archaeological sites. It is believed that the earliest bangles were made of clay and later, other materials such as terracotta, gold, silver, iron which lent itself to smithery were used to make them.
Traditionally, weddings in India are incomplete without the bride wearing a set of bangles. A Bengali bride will wear a white and red set of bangles, which are called Shakha and Pola respectively. It is a sign of luck and fortune for a newlywed to keep these bangles unbroken. In case a newlywed breaks these bangles, her in-laws will arrange for a modest ceremony on an auspicious Punjabi holiday and let them float down the river.
