What is the importance of walkways within your garden landscape? They are an essential component of the appearance of your garden. It isn’t long before the places people walk on begin to look worn and faded if there are no walkways to protect them.

The wonder of the walkways comes from the cultured mixture of the materials used and the forms that they and the path of the walkway take. A bed of heavy sand or small pebble gravel is usually ugly and then the interlocking bricks are hammered into place with a wooden or rubber mallet.

Well-done walkways will have a slope or crown, which is simply a hump in the middle that allows water to drain away so it doesn’t collect on the walkway.

Other common elements that are included in the walkways are informal seating areas, such as benches and platforms, for example. There may also be handrails for bridges or elevated areas, or lighting fixtures for the nighttime ambience, and perhaps a large pool setup to bolster the entire area.

Other additions like birdbaths, feeders, squirrel sheds, pet-friendly plants, and other additions can get lively animals moving in and around the walkway to provide great entertainment and life to gardens around the walkway.

There are many simple landscape plans available that can help you design and implement garden paths and pathways around your own home or condo. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money and is one of the easiest jobs for a DIYer to try.
